Welcome to the Clinic for Legal Assistance to Servicemembers and Veterans.
Situated less than 4 miles from the Pentagon, on the doorstep of the nation’s capital, and neighbor to several major military installations, George Mason prides itself on its commitment and support of those who wear or have worn a uniform in service to our nation.
Direct evidence of that commitment and support can be found in the law school’s Clinic for Legal Assistance to Servicemembers and Veterans (CLASV). Founded in 2004 as the Clinic for Legal Assistance to Servicemembers, its establishment was unique in legal education and has subsequently served as the model for the founding of other servicemember and veterans clinics at law schools across the nation.
The clinic enables Mason law students to represent servicemembers and veterans in a wide variety of litigation and non-litigation matters. Since its inception, clinic students have assisted over 70 clients from all five branches of the armed services, in litigation, adjudication and negotiation regarding consumer protection, administrative and military law and entitlements (TSGLI, PEB Boards and discharge upgrade appeals), family law, bankruptcy, immigration, landlord-tenant, contract, estate and entitlement matters in federal and state forums.
In 2012, CLASV hopes to further expand its scope of services and begin providing assistance offering education and representation related to the filing of disability compensation claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the appeal of denials of benefits claims, and the filing of requests for increases in previously approved disability compensation.
